After the death of the beloved Lady Diana, Princess of Wales, Queen
Elizabeth II (Helen Mirren) insisted that the funeral was a private
matter of the Spencer family and refused to react. She thought it
would be best for the boys (Prince Harry and Prince William). Tony
Blair (Michael Sheen), the new prime minister who was only on board
for a few months, advised the Queen to address to the people of
the United Kingdom. The British people were furious about the inaction
of the royal family, and doubted about the value of the monarchy
system began to build up.
Helen Mirren has been crowned the best actress in a number of awards.
I, as a result, expected a lot on the film. I was a little bit disappointed
about the acting of the film as a whole. Mirren did okay in the
film, but, to me, not exceptional. The rest of the cast was not
quite good, somehow. I was wondering whether the casting persons
wanted to use actors who look like the subjects rather than those
who can act well. I am wrong, because many of the actors actually
have long lists in their filmography.
In any case, I like the story, especially after reading some books
about the royal family. The story brings up the question about the
role and value of the monarchy in the modern world. Also, it shows
how much a society can be influenced by the death of just one person:
Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.
The characters are a bit different from their image I have for
the real persons. For example, my impression for Price Philip is
that he is a quiet person. In the film, he is a disgruntled man.
I hope that these characters are not misrepresented.
