In 1944 under the Fascist rule, Mercedes (Maribel Verdu) was being married to Captain Vidal (Sergi Lopez), taking her daughter Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) to the new family. While she was having an unhappy life in the new environment, she was led to a labyrinth by a dragonfly, where he met Pan, an old fawn, who told her than she was the princess of the fantasy world. However, Pan said she had to perform a few tasks to prove her royalty, or else she would not be a princess and could not see her king father again. Ofelia tried to perform the tasks in the hope to escape from her tragic life.

The story is actually subject to interpretation. Is what Ofelia experience real or just her own fantasy? Based on what happened in the film, I think the story was real in Ofelia's world, but many people thought it was only Ofelia's fantasy.

Anyway, it was not too important. The story is an adult fairy tale where violence in both the real world and the fantasy world was dominant in the film. Despite that, the film is entertaining and engaging.

Baquero's acting is excellent for his age and experience. CG was wonderful and seamless. On the whole, it is a very satisfying film for a lot of people.
