The story of the film is based on the real-life story of the Aramoana Massacre that happened on November 13-14, 1990 in New Zealand. David Gray (Matthew Sunderland), an unemployed gun enthusiast, started shooting people when Garry Holden (Simon Ferry)'s stepson-to-be stepped on Gray's front yard. Gray went on to kill another 12 people before he was apprehended.

The film started out in a very slow pace, describing the background of the people involved and paving the way for an intense hour of shooting and thrill. It is very entertaining in that there is no time for the audience to relax once Gray shot the first victim.

The title of the film is "Out of the Blue", but I think that Gray did not kill out of the blue. Gray had been unemployed for a while. His character was also not the type that can make him mix with other people easily. He also collected guns. There are so many cues that would suggest he might some time kill somebody. In real life, there are a lot of things that we think happen randomly, but in fact there are signs that they would happen. Maybe we just need not to blame fate when in fact we can control ours...
