16-year-old girl Kaoru (Yui), who loved to play guitar, suffered
from XP (xeroderma pigmentosum) and could not be exposed to sunlight,
or else so would die. So, she had to live her life at night. She
sat on the porch many mornings and she began to fall in love with
a boy of about her same age Koji (Takashi Tsukamoto) who passed
by her home a lot of times early in the morning. One night, Kaoru
was playing guitar in the street and saw Koji passing by, and she
ran up to him to befriend with him. Koji was in shock. Later, they
did become a couple, but then Kaoru's medical condition turned worse…
The love story of the film is not about the greatest love between
a guy and a girl. Rather, it is a story about the value of life.
Kaoru was destined to die young, but she enjoyed a meaningful period
of time before she died. I remember a quote that was introduced
to me many years ago, and it runs something like this: It is not
about how many years are in your lives, but how much life is in
your years.
The acting of both young protagonists passes. The ingredient of
the film that I enjoyed most is the music. The title song was exceptionally
pleasing, and was a performance by Yui herself. I can still remember
the tune and some lyrics, too (even though I do not know Japanese).
In sum, the film is good to watch and meaningful.
