Woody Allen's story this time comes with a 3-folded enlightening & realistic theme: (1) Success depends more on luck and chance than on endeavors (hence a rebuke on possibilism in advocating environmentalism); (2) Demarcation between love & lust in romance; (3) Sacrifice of the innocent is a norm in reality. Allen adopts a linear narrative with the use of voice over for diegetic focus (in the 1st shot). The film brings a mild degree of tension under unrestricted narrative and it also comes with a little surprise down the plot. Allen is able to make that all sequences keep the audience tightly on the seat. The film is somewhat anti-climatic at the denouement.
Aesthetically, the film exhibits Allen's trademarks of parallelism (diegetic & visual) and subjective meditation in depth of information dissemination. Other filmic features include visual & vocal motifs and the use of diegetic music. J.R. Meyers' (as Chris Wilton) staging is appropriately astringent & covert. Scarlett Johansson (as Nola Rice) is sexy but her staging is average. It is a good choice for those who like reflecting what human behaves and should behave in the community of confronting elements of rivalry, personal advancement, self-actualization and morale.
