The diegesis is framed from the original story from Ishimori Shotaro
(石森章太郎) with most visual essences remaining but the thematic focus
shifted. Romance becomes the tag line replacing the theme of maintaining
peace and justice. Kamen Riders are fighting between themselves
for sentiment and self interest instead (KR No. 2 being an antagonist
in the movie). This thematic shift is a major shortcoming that defrays
the orthodox of the story. Both Kamen Riders (KR) and villains are
more humanized in both costumes and character. A major change to
the original TV series in the 1970s is that the hamlets of both
KRs and villains are detachable and they can appear in a warrior
jacket with a human head. Yet the martial arts (action) motifs of
fatal kicks, posing and typhoon in transformation are the same as
they were in the 1970s TV series. The movie also features the original
TV series theme song for KR No. 2 though not in full.
The movie is slow pacing and boring for action fanatics. The line
for romance becomes dominant and the director adopts parallel editing
in portraying the KRs and the villains. Martial arts sequences are
short and share no more than 30% of the screen time of 90 minutes.
The actor, Miyauchi Hiroshi (宮內洋) playing Tachibana Tobei (立花藤兵衛),
the owner of the motorcycle workshop, is the same actor who played
V3 in the TV KR series 33 years ago. It is a low budget and disappointing
product for KR fans in either visual or thematic terms.
