It is quite a surprise to me that there is a preview screening of a film with Oscar nominations in HKIFF. In this film made by director/actor George Clooney, the story is mainly about how the news department of CBS (Columbia Broadcasting System) reveals the falseness of the claims made by Senator McCarthy that Communism was getting into the US government during the early 50s, which caused great fears in the country that Communism was going to overthrown capitalism in the US. The film is totally in black and white, and the genuine news archive recorded during the 50s merged seamlessly into the film.
It is very interesting to see those news hosts smoking during filming of the news programs, which is a reflection of what really happened during that time. The film is well made, but it may not suit all people's taste, especially those who knew nothing about the American history during that time, and that the film is mostly about dialogs, with limited actions.
