此片可以說是菲臘西摩荷夫曼的個人表演。他的鋒芒就像他所飾演的主角卡普提一樣的令人為之一震。他就像在演舞台劇一樣，每一幕都要緊緊捉著觀眾的目光。
故事以作家查探一宗兇殺案為題。片中情節有點零碎，但這樣更為寫實。主角原先只是希望以第三者身份揭露行兇者的心態，但最終因太過同情行兇者而於情感上不能自拔，亦因此而導致日後沉淪的結果。對一個學識廣博及受過高等教育的作家而言可說是一個諷刺。
全片都以灰濛濛效果拍攝，很切合主題。畢竟，整個故事都是一個悲劇。
