I have not been a fan of Black Jack. The main reason is that I
do not read comic books. So watching this film gives me a first
chance to know about this super medical doctor. He is completely
different than what I thought he was. According to the film, Black
Jack is an unlicensed doctor with superior medical knowledge and
skills. That does not make much sense but that is what it is. More
important is his background, where he lost his mother at a young
age due to an explosion, and so he is particularly sympathetic to
those who are injured by explosions. This forms the basic framework
of the film.
In this film, Black Jack was asked to visit an unknown place to
save a few sick people for a large sum of money. It turned out that
the patients had contracted with a type of anthrax virus, and they
were sick because of an unknown plot to find the medication for
the virus. Actually, the medication had existed a long time, and
the end of the search revealed the true identity of the man behind
the scene.
The plot is one typical for a film made from comic books. However,
the film is quite easy to watch. The characters are nicely drawn
and on the whole the film is quite entertaining. For those who are
fans of Black Jack, this is a film not to be missed.
By the way, a 7-min short of "The Adventures of Dr. Pinoko"
is shown right before the Black Jack film as a bonus. This film
is also entertaining, even though it is in Japanese with no subtitiles.
