This film of psychiatric crime is a sequel to "Basic Instinct"
(Dir: Paul Verhoeven, 1992) but is much weaker than its predecessor
under the languidness of suspense though Stone (also as Catherine
Tramell) still retains her charm. Under the same theme of risk addiction
and men's lust for charming female, the film exploits the intertextual
visual motifs of ice-stabber, the posture of leg-crossing (and parting
this time - a variation) and under-bed weapon in portraying the
character of Tramell. These portrayals also arise from the generic
motivation of the sequel. Director Michael Canton-Jones uses a highly
restricted narrative for the story and many close-ups for Stone.
With just a few almost invisible winkles, Stone looks bright even
without the use of psychedelic lights as it is in her cosmetics
ads directed by Wong Kar-wai. As the focus is on the staging of
Stone on her seduction, the logic line is weak. The 2 major sexual
sequences are relatively covert and less viewable than those in
1992. David Morrissey (as Dr. Michael Glass, psychologist) is a
stereotype of Michael Douglas though Douglas stages much vividly
than him. Gaps are not closed. Watch it to see whether the epilogue
brings an open ending or a definite answer.
