The film is a fast pacing 100% action thriller from Director Lee Tamahori. It has sequences of body fights, gun fires, car chasing and even tank battles. Traces of "Air Force One" (Dir: Wolfgang Peterson, 1997), "Gone in 60 Seconds" (Dir: Dominic Sena, 2000) and the Batman sequels are visibly identified: the hijack of the US President onboard his train, the super race cars and the ejection escape tube at the underground NSA headquarters. To align the visuals with the pace of the film the director seldom adopts static camera in the sequences and the majority of the shots are made under tracking movement. Fans of action movies will not be disappointed by the violence and the CG of the film. Samuel Jackson (as Agent Augustus Gibbons) stage well but Ice Cube (as XXX member Darious Stone).

The story is far beyond reality but it does carry a message of whether military expansion will save the country. However, lying deep in the theme is still Americanism - right and freedom enjoyed by the US nationals. The film is sardonic in that (1) the disparity between the stated policy of peace and the action of military operation (as intentionally brought under cross editing between the president making peaceful statements and the military personnel taking action in the Congress) and (2) the country is eventually saved by the black civilians (the ethnic minorities) despite the huge budget in military operations and the fact that the country is ruled by the whites.
