This sci-fi film contains explicit traces of "Firefox" (Dir: Clint Eastwood, 1982), "Top Gun" (Dir: Tony Scott, 1986) and "Behind Enemy Lines" (Dir: John Moore, 2001) in terms of ideation (artificial intelligence), story elements (survival under enemy's containment) and visuals (air battle scenes). Director Rob Cohen adopts a linear narrative structure probably with an aim to allow the audience to focus on the CG enabled air battle visuals which appear to be the primary selling point of the flick.
The story primarily starts with artificial intelligence in air fighters, close to what it is in "Firefox", and develops into a struggle on man-machine interface. Story progression is fairly fast with alternate soft (romance) and hard (battle) sequences. Complications of sin concealment and, as an imitation to the immediate predecessor "Behind Enemy Lines", rescue of team-mate, are further added to the plotline in the second half of the film. A blend of these archetypal genre codes brings suspense and enhances the readability of the story. Yet, as there are too much elements infused into the story and the plot is bifurcated into two parallel lines in the second half with diminishing degree of suspense (consequences are anticipated), the strength of tension is diffused, making the whole film far less focused or entertaining than "Behind".
The ideological orientation of the theme oscillates between a complete support and a total denial of entire reliance on machines. It definitely casts a rebuke on the replacement of the human by artificial intelligence at the onset but then forestalls a harmonious cooperation between the two down the line till the end.
In terms of visuals, there are numerous follow shots of missiles and it is visible that Cohen intends to manufacture game-like visuals of air battles and military backups from USS Carrier to titillate loyal fans of "Top Gun" and "Behind". However, the outlook of the Talons and EDI (the subject of the story) violates the basic principles in aerodynamics and a lot of scientific elements in the film are not in parallel to a layman's knowledge of physics. Academy award actor Jamie Foxx (as pilot Henry Purcell) only takes a supporting role in the film.
The movie creates a 117 minute tableaux for aircraft fanatics (but not for knowledgeable laymen or experts on the subject) and contrive a far-reaching issue in the dream-work for further reflection and exploration in our world of reality. It is a thematically average (and prophetic) and visually good film.
