Jack (Thomas Haden Church) was about to get married. He asked his best friend Miles (Paul Giamatti), an introvert single teacher, to go for a trip with him. He wanted to have a relationship with another girl before he had his knot tied. In the trip, they met Stephanie (Sandra Oh) in a vineyard. Stephanie knew waitress Maya (Virginia Madsen), whom Miles had a crush on for a long time. So, they gathered in Stephanie's house. Stephanie and Jack soon developed a very close relationship, while Miles chickened out in developing a relationship with Maya. At this time, Miles learned that his ex-wife Victoria (Jessica Hecht) would show up in Jack's wedding. Unable to get over the past marriage, Miles was very upset…
The film is very different from other Hollywood films. There are almost no climaxes in the film. So, not all viewers would like this film. However, it is easy to watch, and would probably make the audience think about the characters' attitude towards living, and probably their own, too. The film parallels the different kinds of wines with the different kinds of attitude. Some people like one wine, while some people "would leave if somebody orders" the same wine. That is just life. One thing, though, that the story does preach is that we have to pro-active to pursue what we like, no matter how you view your life. I have to agree with that.
The acting is marvelous. The actors of four main characters (Paul, Jack, Maya, and Stephanie) all did excellently. No wonder it had received so many award nominations.
Like I said, not all people would like the film, but I do think that it is a good one, and I recommend it.
