The film is based on a real-life story of Ramon Sampedro.

When Ramon Sampedro (Javier Bardem) was young, he dived near a beach and banged himself onto the seabed. From that moment on, he could not move his body below his neck. He wanted euthanasia as he did not see any value for his living. However, the law said that whoever helped him to die would have committed murder. So, Ramon had to fight with the court. Some people supported him because they thought Ramon had a right to choose, or because they wanted to challenge the government. However, his family did not want him die. Julia (Belen Rueda), a lawyer, wanted to help him with the case. She also wanted to help Ramon publish what he wrote before he died. Actually, she had her own agenda. Rosa (Lola Duenas), a part time DJ, wanted to know Ramon, and later fell in love with him. Ramon declined her love, but told her that she should help him die if she lived him…

Although the film is about seeking death, its chemistry is much brighter than dark. More than being afraid of death, the viewer would more likely be directed to think about "living": Is living a right, or is it an obligation? Who should tell another person whether he has to live or not? The film does not really give the viewer an answer. As a matter of fact, when Ramon called his friend Gene (Clara Segura), who had been supporting his seeking of death, that he was about to die, she burst into tears instead of being supportive. She doubted her support towards Ramon's campaign. So did the writers.

The acting of the film is very fine. Like many other Spanish films, you do not see a lot of good lookers. It is not a bad thing, though, as people would focus more on the acting than the actors. On the whole, the film is very well made. In fact, the film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign film.
