The film is a play based and a Pulitzer Prize winner. It is a deep portrayal on (1) father-daughter relations; (2) relations with other family members; (3) trust in love; and (4) endurance in work and pursuance on personal objectives. Director John Madden adopts a non-linear and complex narrative structure for the story. Plots of different temporal dimensions and intrinsic meditation are intermingled and it comes with several long flashbacks that reveal the relations between Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) and her father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins) and the mystery of the writer of the mathematical proof. The theme is that trust in love is difficult to be proved. Developing along the motif of "proof", the story (1) is told in a partially restricted narrative that perpetrates a little suspense on who the writer (Robert or Catherine) of the mathematical proof is and (2) levies a focus on the proof of trust in love, which is hinted at the epilogue to be difficult. This motif effectively directs the audience to the focus of the diegesis.

The story is slow paced with very strong causality. The plots echelon with steadily soaring readability in their way to the climax. The mood of instability and unease is strengthened with the use of sentimental and wistful music as well as the grey colour tone in mise-en-scenes. Paltrow and Hopkins stage excellently. It is a movie that expounds trust in human concourse and is not be missed.
