Director Peter Chan uses a complex narrative structure for this musical movie (genre: backstage musical - actors dance and sing on stage as opposed to in any locale). The temporal and spatial dimensions are multi-folded: (1) the present time of 2005 in which the musical movie directed by Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung) in the story is being made; (2) the past of Sun Na (Zhou Xun) and Nie in Bejing in 1995; and (3) the musical scenes of the musical movie.

The various spatial and temporal orientations are intermingled in alternate sequences with the use of flashbacks and intrinsic meditation of the characters. Hence the movie adopts the narrative notion of "movie in movie", forcing the audience to switch on their brain in following the plotline. The story is framed from the perspective of Lin Jian Dong (Takeshi Kaneshiro) but the narrative orientation rests with a visitor (Ji Jin-hee) of the film production workshop as he steps off from a bus at the beginning and boards a bus in the epilogue. This symmetrical ending gives a message to the audience that the story is complete. As the movie in movie is a parallel of what the characters encounter in the reality (of this movie), its (the movie in the movie) diegesis and the lyrics are a projection of what the characters are at in the reality (of this movie). The film also comes with some tricks that give temporary illumination on the audience.

In filmic perspectives, the musical sequences are finely made with Broadway-like dancing and singing shots (in dense mise-en-scenes) with flashing costumes and grand props and settings. Apart from narrative parallelism, music and lyrics are fine and reflective of the situation of the characters in the diegesis. Zhou stages very well in performing the two distinguished Sun Na of 1995 and 2005. Cinematography is fine with Peter Pau as the director of cinematography (but not as cinematographer). It is another good movie of the month.
