During WWI, the British (actually Scottish), French, and German armies had groups on the frontline close to each other. It was right before Christmas when the Scot soldiers played their Christmas carol and the German opera singer/soldier rose from the trench to sing and went towards the British. Eventually, the three sides decided on a truce, at least for Christmas. Later, the incident was discovered by the generals at the top of all sides and all soldiers and all sides were punished in their own countries' ways…
I think people's first questions would be: Is it possible? As conveyed in the film, the soldiers did not necessarily think that they were fighting for their countries, but for the greed at the top of the government (compare to what happen in Iraq today). Soldiers killed because they did not want to be killed. So, if something can trigger trusts among the "enemies", like Christmas, what happened in "Merry Christmas" is possible.
In the film, there was a football match between two of the countries. This made me thing about the sports event today, where athletes compete for their countries (at least on the surface), and the success of the athletes turns into pride of their countrymen, and everybody is happy. Wars were used to unite countries. So today's sporting events actually eliminate the need for wars to a certain extent. If more country leader can see this way, the world will be a safer one.
May peace be on Earth...
