Louise (Catherine Frot) went to Paris from her home in Le Mans to visit a publisher. She went to Paris earlier to spend some time with her elder sister Martine (Isabelle Huppert). Louise's energy annoyed Martine all the time. During Louise's stay, Martine found the affair between her husband and his friend. With all the sad incidents happening at the same weekend, Martine found it very hard to take¡K
The film spends a lot of time to compare and contrast the characters of Louise and Martine. Louise was full of life and was curious about a lot of thing. On the other hand, Martine was mean and hated everything around her. Also, Martine though that Louise was not good enough to publish a book, since Louise had been staying in the countryside of Le Mans pretty much all her life. I feel that the film condemns the attitude of Martine towards life, and suggests that a positive attitude towards life is what we need. By the way, it looks like Martine pretty much though that happiness was only a very small part of life. That is something to think about.
