It is a story with a theme on the dilemma of (excessive) paternalism on children (those psychologically weak in particular) and the spontaneous pursuit of self-actualization. Director Chung Yoon-chul portrays the evolving relations among the key characters through chores in daily life in a very fine and detailed way. The first half of the film focuses on the expectation on the autistic Cho-won (Cho Seung-woo) from his mom, Kyung Sook (Kim Mi-sook). The expectation then evolves and diminishes down the plot. The second half has the focus on Cho-won's own expectation (the emerging desire to complete the Marathon). In between this contrast, the director also complicates the narrative by proliferating into on the coach's evolving attitude towards Cho-won (from being pressed to enthusiastic). These changes of position (viewpoint) establish a role reversal between Cho-won's mom (from enthusiastic to retreating) and the coach (from reluctant to supportive) in the narrative, making the story enriched and more readable.
Director Chung uses visual motifs of chocolate cake and zebra stripes and vocal motif of "million dollar legs" to arouse the sentiment of the audience. The vocal motif is particularly striking when the one who asks the question (mom) and the one who answers (Cho-won) it is reversed near the end of the film (Cho-won asks, mom answers). Several sequences of flashbacks are used to reveal the feeling of Kyung-sook and Cho-won. Chung does not invoke emotional narrative but portrays the story in a calm and realistic manner instead. Changes of behaviours of the characters are often depicted un-embellished in minor chores of daily life, for instance, Cho-won's sharing of a bottle of water with his coach.
Occasionally, the plotline appears to divert the audience to some anticipation on Cho-won's unexpected competence somewhere in the middle but it eventually turns against the anticipation of the audience. This is an intentional device of the director in making the elements in the story more natural, down to the ground and realistic, purporting through the narrative to tell the audience that Cho-won is an ordinary young man though he has good memory. The supermarket-gym-metro-prairie montage sequence in the epilogue portrays the intrinsic meditation of Cho-won upon his self-actualization.
Under the director's slow cutting and the excellent staging from Cho and Kim, the movie is a tasteful one that suffices to deliver a slow-digestion type of touching story to fanatics of the genre.
