It is an adventure and Western film that delivers a highly readable Robin Hood-like story in a screen time of 132 minutes. Director Martin Campbell adopts a mix of restricted and unrestricted narrative with the main plot falling on Zoro (Antonio Banderas) and a parallel plot on his wife, Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones). As a sequel to part one, "The Mask of Zorro" (same director, 1998), the movie begins with the couple's son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso), grown up to a pre-teenage and Zorro continuing his hero deeds. Story progression comes to its disequilibrium and the main plot is branched into a parallel when Zorro's identity is accidentally discovered by 2 federal state agents who later capture Elena. Thereafter the readability of the film is further enhanced by (1) sword fighting actions and other stunts; (2) the mystery (a minor suspense) of the identify of Count Armand (Rufus Sewell) and (3) the climax of the protagonists' (Zorro's whole family and Father Quintero (Tony Amendola)) striking back on the villains.
It is a good action-packed movie suitable for the whole family though it does not come with any stylistic or purposefully embellished filmic features. The linear temporal dimension of the 2 plots is easy to follow by kids. Humours are sporadically precipitated in the film. Zeta-Jones, coming with some action staging in the film, is still charming after giving birth to 2 kids. The Spanish music is melodic and tasteful. With exciting action visuals, moody European melodies (which are rare in the US movies) and an enlightening theme of striking a balance between family and responsibility to the community at large, it is a film not to miss.
