I have watched quite a number of great Japanese films distributed by major film distributors in Hong Kong. Last Quarter is distributed by a small new distributor and I was skeptical about the quality of the film. The distributor sent me a DVD instead of inviting me and other film critics to a theater to watch the film. That made me feel even more skeptical and I was wondering if I would waste 2 hours at home watching it. Well, here's the verdict: It is good.
Mizuki (Chiaki Kuriyama) dropped by a mansion where she met Adam (Hideto Takarai). He told her that they had met before, and later asked her to go away with him. She was hit by a truck when they tried to elope. Hotaru (Tomoka Kurokawa) lost her cat and somehow went to the mansion where she met the soul of Mizuki, whom at that time did not know who herself was. Later, Hotaru found that Mizuki was related to the former girlfriend of Adam...
The plot is quite an interesting one, although it is a bit hard to understand at first due to the complexity of the character of Mizuki and the linkage to the moon cycle. Many things only make sense to me when I thought back what actually happened. I am sure I will get more out of the film if I watch it a second time. Kuriyama (who played a role in the Hollywood film Kill Bill)'s performance is excellent in the film. She has evolved much from her early films like Shikoku.
In sum, Last Quarter gave me a pleasant surprise and I believe it is going to do the same to you. It is a film worthwhile to watch.
