Lana (Michelle Williams) just went back to Los Angeles from Israel where the Palestinians lived. His relative Paul Jeffries (John Diehl) worked surveillance beat to protect the country against terrorism in Los Angeles, which had been his job since the fall of the World Trade Center towers. One day, an Arab with suspicious behavior was shot dead outside the shelter Lana stayed. He thought the murder was related to terrorists' activities and so he traced the through the family of the murdered. In the end, he found there was nothing special about the murder, but the incident posed much impact on his view about terrorism.
The story progression is of medium pace and that suits pretty much a film of its genre. The film explores the fear of Americans towards terrorism, and their misunderstanding of the world outside the US. In the eyes of an average American, the World Trade Center twin towers fell because the Middle Easterners were jealous of their freedom, because that was what they were told. It sounds funny but many Americans believe in this nonsense. I spoke to some Americans just last month and they consider, based on the definition of terrorism (military action against non-military targets), the United States was the biggest terrorist country in the world (I would like to see how Bush fights his own country. Please refer to my review on 11'09"01 for discussion on terrorism by America against Chile.). And that, according to them, America was attacked because of how they treated the Middle East. Actually, this is what director Wim Wenders wants to talk about in the film. Lana told Paul that when the Palestinians living near her heard about the 9/11 attack and they all cheered. Paul asked Lana if they were all terrorists. And, Lana answered that they were just normal civilians. As much as I do not like to see something like the 9/11 attack happen, the reactions of the Arabs are understandable. In the end, their visit to the Ground Zero was quite an enlightening sequence.
You do not have to the Americans I talked to, but one thing that I am sure is that there are a lot of things for us to think about 911 and terrorism. Maybe this film can enlightened you in this respect.
