During the 12th century Crusades, many Europeans went to Jerusalem for their faith or for their fortune. Balian (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith there, just had his wife who just committed suicide buried. He was come across by Godfrey (Liam Neeson), Baron of Ibelin who was Balian never-met father, on the way to Jerusalem. Balian wanted to follow Godfrey after he killed a clergyman to ask God for forgiveness. After a difficult journey when lost his father, he arrived at the Holy Land, when he could not feel God. With his royalty status, he soon became an integral part of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. The princess Sibylla (Eva Green) liked him, but when King Baldwin (Edward Norton) was to die and the King asked Balian to marry Sibylla and had the throne passed to him, he refused because he thought it was not right to take Sibylla from Lusignan (Martin Csokas). Lusignan wanted to go to war with the Arabians whose faith was Muslim. With him on the throne, a war between the Christians and Muslims was inevitable…

I have to admit that the scenes in the film are very grand and very real. Costumes are very fine and the city of Jerusalem looked as if the set were real. However, the goods about the film are not only about visual. The cast led by experienced actors like Liam Neeson and Jeremy Irons (Tiberias) is great, and Orlando Bloom did do a good job in playing the role of Balian. What's more, I admire the story very much. Although the film is an American film and US has more than half of the population are followers of some form of Christianity, the film does not portray the Muslim Arabians as evil. Rather, the film portrays them as reasonable people who were true to their faith, and they went into war with the Western world (the Crusaders) just to protect their home.

At the beginning of the film, people in Jerusalem worshipped their own gods and there seemed to be harmony. It was a world that we can only dream of when we look at what is happening now in the areas around Israel. The end of the film reminds us that the clash between Christianity and Muslim in the Middle East is still happening. The clash has lasted more than 1000 years now and is not stopping. Compared to Balian's negotiation with the Muslims that gave the people of the Kingdom of Jerusalem freedom to go to their Holy Land when the Muslim Arabian got what they wanted, the current situation is laughable in a very sad way.
