The story is based on the original film of 1933 (Dir: Cooper, M & Schoedsak, E.). Here the new stuff is the cross-over among Kong, dinosaurs and the alien-like giant reptile creatures. Long in screen time (188 mins), the entire story is segregated into 7 narrative segments: (1) Carl Denham (Jack Black)'s background / career and his crossing path with Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts); (2) the voyage to search for the Skull Island; (3) the crew's encounter with the Island's tribe; (4) the development of amity and the soft time between Kong and Ann; (5) the severe fight between Kong and the dinosaurs; (6) Kong's being captured and (7) Kong in New York.

Director Peter Jackson maintains his favorite shooting mode of using oval traveling crane shots for most establishment shots. Occasional swish pans directing the audience to the object / action and montage sequences are adopted for narrative and artistic purposes. The most spectacular aspect that expounds the masculine theme of contrasting the circumstantial variants / destiny of Kong between his being in the wild and in the city is the use of visual parallel in having Kong and Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts) on the jungle's plateau in one sequence and on the top of the Empire Building in another. This parallelism is further visually strengthened by using the metaphor of having US fighters in New York as an imagery substitute of the giant bats in Kong's native habitat.

The story itself is not attractive. Some gaps are not closed. For instances, where does the native tribe on the Skull Island come from? Where do they go after being dispelled by the armed crew? How is Kong carried by the vessel back to New York? Why is mighty Kong easily cuffed by the steel chain despite of his forcefulness?

The appeal / charm of the film basically comes from its being a re-make after more than 70 years from its first appearance (and after almost 30 years since its last appearance (the original screenplay, 1976, Dir: John Guillermin) on the big screen). This cocktail of ape, dinosaurs and alien-mannered creatures provides a fresh input into the antique and suffices to rejuvenate the colossal ape for the visual appeasement of the younger generation. Yet, the original theme of a gendered portray on the responsibility, strengths and weaknesses of the male (a metaphor for the mankind) remains intact in this CG version.
