The movie carries suspense right from the beginning at the pre-opening credits sequence to manufacture a strong hermeneutic atmosphere. The narrative is highly restricted but its structure is within the classic Hollywood mode of commencing with the exposition, through the disequilibrium and progression, leading to the climax and resolution. Story development invokes a high degree of hypothesis formulation activities on the part of the audience. The epilogue is not disclosed here. The audience can find it out by themselves whether there is any surprise or it is within their expectation at the denouement.

The film witnesses an intensive use of shots/reverse shots in the dialogues between agent Tobin Keller (Sean Penn) and the interpreter Silvia Broome (Nicole Kidman), probably to align the visuals with the diegesis of the chemical relations between the two (both admiring each other on account of their individual past). Both main characters stage very well. The overall pace of the film is not fast.
