During the civil war of El Salvador in the 1980s, kids over the age of 12 were drafted by the government against the guerrillas, or could be drafted by the guerrillas, to fight in the civil war. Chava (Carlos Padilla) was 11 years old. His father fled to US to avoid the war. He suddenly became the man of the house, having to take care of his younger brother and sister. Many times, battles broke out in the middle of the night and his family was feared to death. He witnessed his classmates being drafted and taken away from school. His 12th birthday was approaching, and he was very scared…

The film depicts the irony of the El Salvador civil war, the brutality of the El Salvador government, and more importantly how kids like Chava faced the war. The film is very well made. The battle scenes are not as grand as those in Hollywood films, but are equally real and frightening. The performance of Carlos Padilla as Chava was excellent. The young girl Cristina Maria (Xuna Primus) was so adorable.

The film earned itself a number of nominations and awards, and is highly regarded by the Internet community. Obviously, this is not a mainstream film is Hong Kong. But, it needs to be a film to watch because of the quality and the emotion provoking story. I highly recommend it.
