The narrative of the film is under a highly restricted mode and entails 3 subplots to complement the main plot of the protagonist, police officer Jeff Tally (Bruce Willis). Story causality is strong and the sequences are tightly knitted. Among the 3 subplots, namely, Tally's family, the teenager gang of 3 and the mystery crime gang, the latter two create a powerful tension down the plotline and firmly hold the audience in their seats. Director Florent Siri attempts to simulate some familiar tension-creating stuff from other thriller movies to heighten the mood of the audience. The most notable three are (1) the fortified security system in Mr. Smith (Kevin Pollak)'s house from "The Panic Room" (Dir: David Fincher, 2002), (2) the teenager gang's chasing of Tommy (Jimmy Bennett) and Jennifer (Michelle Horn) inside the air duct from the "Alien" series and (3) the situational dilemma of the "Die Hard" series. However, these substances produce less tensional effects than they do in their original sources (save that the synergy of these elements in the movie is sufficiently good).

The 2 major differentiations between this film and the Die Hard series are that (1) the protagonist, Tally, does not thrive inside a contained physical locale but falls into a non-physical situational conundrum that threatens the live of his family as well as Mr. Smith's and (2) Bruce is portrayed not as an omnipotent police mogul but a vulnerable chap with psychological (past failure) and physical (toppling hands under pressure) weaknesses.

Though Bruce is not engaged with many body fights as he does in his previous movies, the film comes with a lot of visual excitement and shocks that gratify the audience. The presence of the mystery gang further adds another rendition of suspense to the diegesis. It is for this reason that the film is a "must see" for fanatics of crime and thriller movies.

The story ends with a double climax: saving Tommy and Jennifer from the teenager gang from the house and saving Tally's family members from the mystery gang. As the identity of the mystery gang remains undisclosed, not all gaps are filled at the end of the movie. Nevertheless, Siri does a good job in coupling action, tension, suspense and a once-failed hero.
