Produced in 1999, it is a German film under the genres of romance and melodrama. Set in a background of Hungary in the 1930s, the story is about a lady, Ilona (Erika Marozsan), who falls in love with 2 men, Laszlo (Joachim Krol), a restaurant owner, and Andras (Sefano Dionisi), a pianist working in Laszlo's restaurant. The film depicts in detail the congenial relations among the three and develops along the musical / vocal motif "Gloomy Sunday", which is a melody composed by Andras. The harmonious love among the three in the first half of the story is ruined by the return of a German Colonel Hans Wieck (Ben Becker) who has a devil thought of seizing Ilona (love and body) from her 2 lovers. The story taps into the history of Germany's expansionism and Hitler's slaughtering of the Jews down the plot. The light-hearted mood of the film in the first half is replaced by a tragedy in its second half.
Director Rolf Schubel begins with the aftermaths of the tragedy in the late 20th century and uses a flash back to narrate on how Ilona entangles with the 3 men in the 1930's. Pacing is moderately fast. The narrative is dominantly unrestricted but becomes restricted at the epilogue (watch it and find out what and why). Schubel manages the plots well that although more than 80 percent of the plot time is spent in Laszlo's restaurant, the audience are kept intact with the diegesis without being bored. The locale of the story is repetitive but there are variations in story development (change of characters' personalities and others) in the same locale. This makes the story very tasteful. The film also comes with a few love-making sequences of frontal female (upper body) nudity which perhaps is not absolutely necessary for story progression. The personality of Colonel Wieck perhaps is sardonic of the Nazi party and other Nazi officers who survived the post war trials.
Aesthetic-wise, Schubel uses a few shots of asynchronized sound and builds several elements of suspense to illuminate the audience, thereby effectively enhancing the degree of readability. Most spectacularly, as anticipated, the theme music "Gloomy Sunday" is outstandingly moody (but very melancholic). The orchestral version played in several night establishment shots of Budapest is remarkably melodic (synergy of visuals and music). It is a good film.
