The film falls within a mixed of genres of gangs, parody and supernatural potency. The first half resembles "Kill Bill" in that gang conflicts, assassinations and traditional martial arts are the backbone of the story elements. The second half shifts to the spectrum of parody with the supernatural elements of the killers, which in fact weaken the readability of the film in terms of pure martial arts. The film is another "east meets west" in the action genre (The sequels of "The Matrix" and "Kill Bill" are predecessors), featuring oriental martial arts as well as relations between master and disciple. The diegesis is not outstanding, nor is it attractive. Elektra (Jennifer Garner) is assigned to assassinate a man and his daughter and she later turns to save them from other killers. The story with the gangs, the master, disciples and different assassinators could have been more sophisticated (at least something like "Kill Bill") than it is. Though the narrative is restricted, it does not bring any striking suspense or surprise. The intrinsic turmoil of Elektra is only superficially exploited in sporadic flashbacks. The director uses a lot of profile shots, both tight close-ups and body long shots, to highlight the sharp facial and body outline (some with attached shadows and some in silhouette) of Garner. Nevertheless, the supernatural elements in the diegesis ruin the film, injecting some superfluous substances that spoil the charm of pure martial arts.
