Basically, it is a film of visual excitement. Nevertheless, there is a theme emerging near the epilogue that expounds the dilemma between obedience to immoral instructions for the goodness of the majority on the one hand and morality on the other. Yet exploration on the theme is weak and it renders itself no more than a decorative substance subordinate to visual excitement.

Director Andrzej Bartkowiak uses a restricted narrative in the movie. There are lots of compositional and filmic elements resembling those in the sci-fi thriller and the alien genres (the alien genre is an emerging subgenre of the blanket genre of horror): fully armoured soldiers with heavy-duty weapons, subdued lighting, flash and blurred scenes of unknown sticky creatures, abrupt screams from characters and the like. The combination of these substances and the chase-and-catch fighting sequences in parallel plots with delayed revelation of findings suffice to create tension and satisfy fanatics of both the genres and computer games.

Most spectacularly, the film features a long POV (point-of-view) sequence of attack from one of the key characters, John Grimms (Karl Urban). The sequence imitates some chase-and-shoot computer games and is the film distributor's vantage point of propaganda. In a nutshell, it is a Mars (outer-space) version of "The Cave" (Dir: Bruce Hunt, 2005).
