Charlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) won a trip to see the mysterious chocolate factory of Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp) which produced the best selling chocolate in the world. Other winners to the trip include Violet (Annasophia Robb), Veruca (Julia Winter), Mike (Jordan Fry), and Augustus (Philip Wirgratz). Each kid would bring a guardian to the factory, and one of the kids would be a winner who would receive a mysterious prize. Willy Wonka took the kids into the factory for a tour and the guests saw a lot of amazing things. However, the kids had accidents one by one. Interestingly, whenever a kid had an accident, a group of Oompa Loompa (Deep Roy) would come out to perform a dance…
At first, I thought this film was going to be a kids' film. After I watched it, I thought I was wrong, because the film has elements for both kids and adults. It is obvious that there are some humors in the film which only the adults are able to understand. At the same time, I saw kids enjoying the film very much. Many times I wonder how much non-English speaking kids could understand an English film with only Chinese subtitles. For this film, it is a non-issue.
The cast is great. Johnny Depp performed his role as Willy Wonka well. Freddie Highmore as Charlie was also great. He did at least as well as in Finding Neverland, if not better. CG was also great, although I was told that many things that I originally considered as CG were actually real things.
I think the theme of the film is about being a good kid, like Charlie, has its merit. Charlie is definitely a good model for kids. He is very considerate, like he considered forfeiting his dream to visit the chocolate factory to help his family financially, and he was the best-behaved kid in the tour. Not only that. The film also gives examples of bad kids, like all the other 4 kids in the tour, and what the consequences could be (although exaggerated).
I have watched a lot of films during this summer, and I have to say that this film is on the top of my list for this period. In sum, it is a film that both kids and adults would enjoy. If you as a parent are wanting to take your kid(s) to a film or if you are just looking for a film to watch now, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory should also be on the top of your list.
