The dream-team, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, delivers a very good movie with a deep educational theme for both children and parents: excessive care spoils a child whereas filial piety and care on family go a long way. The film belongs to a hybrid of genres: fantasy and adventure (dominant), comedy, straight musical and parody (traces).
It starts with the common grey tone of Burton's flicks but then progresses into a colourful world inside the chocolate factory. Burton uses an off-screen voice over to alienate the audience by invoking a story telling mode and adopts elements of straight musical by working on 4 singing and dancing sequences in the film. The songs are conclusive and educational regarding the behaviours of the bad children. Deep space staging gives a sense of spaciousness in the factory. Fantastic props and settings of a variety of contrasting colours further add strengths to the effects of the visuals on the mood of the audience in this fantasy genre. Flashbacks are built to reveal the background and account for the pixel behaviours of the chocolate factory's owner, Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp). Personalities of the characters are distinct. Charlie (Freddie Highmore)'s grandpa, Joe (David Kelly), even comes with an unaccomplished dream. Thematically, the sequences of Willy and his dad, Wilbur Wonka (Christopher Lee) connote the adverse impacts of excessive paternalism on children. Other humours and laughers are appropriately built at certain interval of the screen time. These filmic features and philosophy are more than enough to redress the untimely shadow of Michael Jackson.
Depp and Freddie Highmore stage very well. Another actor in the supporting role, Kenya-born 4-feet-4-inch Indian Deep Roy (as Oompa Loompas), adds much laughter to the story as well. Do not miss the last shot!
It is a very good film carrying a meaningful theme and bringing fantastic mise-en-scenes.
