Director Bruce Hunt uses a simple and unrestricted narrative and does not implant any surprise down the line. He manages the mantling of tension in the film very well. Tension is established right from the moment the diver team jump into the water. It then perpetuates through the dimness of the underwater caves, the sound of divers' respiration through their scubas and the completely enclosed/narrow space inside the cave. The strength of tension is further enhanced by making use of blackouts at certain interval of the film for narrative retardation. In terms of diegesis and character formation, there is no marked delineation regarding the personalities among the protagonists and the roles of the team members in the mission are not clearly differentiated. These weaknesses reduce the readability of the story. On the whole, it is a good choice for audience pursuing prolonged tension but cannot be on equal footing with the "Alien" series in terms of surprise and diegesis.
