It is impossible to write a summary of the story of "The Best of Youth", but to say that it is about the lives of members of the Carati family (Nicola, Matteo, Adrianna, Francesca…) and the people around them (Giulia, Carlo, Mirella, Giorgia…) during the period between 1966 and 2003 in Italy, where their experience the historical events in the country during that time. If a summary is possible, then the length of the film, which is more than 6 hours, would be considered ridiculously long.
I have been watching the DVD advertisement of this film on TV for a few months. I wondered why a film with so many awards would not be put on the silver screen here. I was not aware that it was 6 hour long. So now I know why not many people would want to go to the theater for this film. However, after watching this film in the theater, I think all the 6 hours are worth it all (and I was expecting it to be 2 hours at most when I entered the theater, and yes, I did not eat well that night as a result). Actually, I did not like it when I left the theater, because the film is quite slow-paced and it was extremely long. In fact, it is the longest film of a single episode (although split into Part I and Part II) that I have ever seen (so, not counting the Star Wars saga of 12 hours and the Lord of the Rings "trilogy" for 9 hours). But the next morning when I woke up, I was thinking about the Carati family, wondering what had happened to them after the end of the film, and I began to love the film.
The film is consistently good throughout the 6 hours. I think is very difficult to maintain such high quality considering the length of the film. Visual was great and many scenes are very beautiful. Also, I was always thinking about what was going to happen next. So, the film is long but not boring. It is also a thought-provoking film. It will make you think what you would do if you were in the characters' situation.
In sum, it is a great film and deserves all the awards it got. It is a film to watch, in the theater or at the luxury of your home.
