The film is a prologue of the entire Batman series and is distinct from its predecessors in the following 5 aspects: (1) It comes with a stronger theme - a deeper thematic exploration on whether revenge on crimes is justice (the epilogue of the film definitely denies the proposition). The film also carries a rebuke to destroying the whole as a resolution to remove a few bad. (2) It is the first time in the series that contains elements of "East meets West" in terms of Japanese martial arts (swordsmanship) and the portrayal of China as one of the story locales. (3) Batman / Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is portrayed as having acquired his mighty skills of martial arts from a mystery guy, Ducard (Liam Neeson) and the League of Shadows Warriors headed by Ra's Al Ghul (Ken Watanabe). (4) A relatively in-depth portrayal of the intrinsic evolution of Bruce Wayne from a psychologically languid kid to a powerful dark warrior. (5) It comes with less dramatic costumes for the antagonists (in contrast to the Joker, the Penguin and the Riddler in the previous episodes) and an un-characterized (pale) outlook of the Batmobile.

Story progression entails alternate sequences of flash backs in a mild pace. The overall pacing is fast. There is a good blend among the visuals, action and music. A defect of the action is that the body fighting sequences at the denouement are too fast that it virtually turns almost all fighting shots into swish shots, making the audience visually difficult to follow and thus turning some good visual artifice into a mess. The post-modern setting of the city of Gotham resembling New York, however, acts as a refresher for the series. Nevertheless, it is a good flick that most thriller / action lovers will find the 140 minutes worth their bucks.
