The story is about the sending of Tom Hardy (John Travolta), an agent of drug investigation, to assist Osborne (Connie Nielsen), an army investigator, in finding out the truth of a murder of a special force trainer, Sergeant Nathan West (Samuel L. Jackson), by one or more of his cadets during a military exercise in the jungles of Panama.

Director John McTiernan adopts a highly restricted narrative in the film. The 2 surviving witnesses reveal completely different pictures of incident. McTiernan uses dim lighting, lightening and rainy/stormy weather to enhance the degree of suspense in terms of visual and audio effects. Though the film is under the genres of thriller and mystery, it does not come with an excessive amount of fire-exchange or body fighting sequences. Dialogues are the key component in the story. Story progression is moderate at the beginning but is accelerated in the last 30 minutes. McTiernan is able to arouse the brain working mechanism of the audience under the intensive use of flashbacks down the plotline. Most readably is that McTiernan builds up a double climax in the denouement, leading to an ending beyond the anticipation of most audience. The film is highly recommended to those who like the genre.
