The film consists of 7 major sections with the first two and the last sections being non-diegetic. The sections are separated by the transition device of cute animated graphics. The second non-diegetic section (straight musical exhibiting singing and dancing characters) is the worst in the movie. It seems that directors Isshin Inudo and Yoshio Kuroda thrive to bring all devices to appease the audience, especially puppy lovers and kids. They adopt a non-linear narrative with flashbacks and intrinsic meditation in the other 5 sections in the film. In terms of the range of information disseminated, the directors manipulate subjective meditation (both human character and the dogs) and visualize intrinsic thoughts. Some misleading information is intentionally precipitated in the middle of the story to illuminate the audience in terms of temporal dimension. It is under this relatively complex narrative structure that some audience, kids in particular, may find it undecipherable, although story causality is fairly strong.
It is obvious that the directors attempt to infuse different moods to different sequences of the film: straight musical in comedic staging in the second and middle sections; sober mood in the last 2 sections. The most touching section of the film is the last montage sequence about the entire life of a dog, shown with inter-titles but without vocals. The directors firstly use a narrative to portray the passion of a young girl master on her puppy and then use a narrative reversal to portray the puppy's gratitude on its girl master, with both parts shown in an emotional manner. The section is not related to any other sections but implicitly brings out the theme of the movie: raising puppies brings joys (the process) and sadness (when they pass away) to their masters but it is still worth the passion because of the puppies' loyalty and the intimate relations between the puppies and their master. It is this theme and conclusion that it is a "must see" for puppy lovers though the whole film is spoiled by the non-diegetic musical section. However, audience should not expect that it is a product with the same grade as "Quill" (Dir: Yoichi Sai, 2004) as the latter is far better made than this film.
