The film proceeds in a slow pacing with many shots made under static camera. Even if camera movement are involved, tracking and panning are restricted to the bare minimum. The narrative is restricted until the very last sequences embodying a double climax in which the identities of the main bad guys are revealed under a 2-tier order. The fighting sequences exhibit Tarantino's Kill Bill style of violence (blood beams and amputation). Still staging (not freeze frames) with prolonged silence is repeatedly used after quick sword-fighting scenes to show contrasts.

Acoustic elements are no weaker than those from Kill Bill. The director (Takeshi Kitano) manages music and sound effects well in adding synergies to the narrative. He fuses on-screen impact ambient sounds with non-diegetic music to manufacture rhythmic melodies (6 times in the film). Music from impact musical instruments of low sound frequency is intensively used in the second half of the film, producing a sober and misery mood tallying with the plot (that kind of music is unconventional in Japanese sword-fighting episodes). When the plot turns to a joyful portrayal of the protagonists, the director uses the on-screen sound of their dancing steps (tic-tac) to produce a delightful melody to escalate the mood of the viewer near the end. The mix is marvellous!

Nevertheless, sporadic senses of humour are implanted particularly in the ending in which a freeze frame of Zatoichi's (also Takeshi Kitano) front shot in a wider close-up with his eyes open is shown (noting that the film also begins with a freeze frame of Zatoichi). Yet the greatest surprise to the viewer is perhaps, as revealed in the very last moment of the 115 minute screen time, that Zatoichi is not blind (an altered diegesis)!
