Troy is a movie with intermingled motifs of glory, honour, love and sacrifice, revenge, power and greed, with sharp personalities of characters. Its narrative is unrestricted and the plot structure is linear and chronological. Nevertheless, the linearity does not hamper the viewer's interest in the story development because the characters' rich personalities and their tragic fates are more than sufficient to maintain the mood of the viewer throughout the screen time of 162 minutes.
The film embraces 3 pairs of contrasts among the protagonists:
(1) Prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) versus Prince Hector (Eric Bana): Paris puts love on top of his country's interest whereas Hector prioritizes the well-being of his country and his glory over that of his family and his own life. This narrative contrast is visually reinforced by the plots of Paris' retreat from his battle with King Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson) and Hector's fatal brave battle with Achilles.
(2) Prince Hector versus Achilles (Brad Pitt): Hector fights to defend his country, where behind is a material motive of protecting his citizens whereas Achilles purely fights for glory, which signifies a spiritual pursuit. The relations between Hector and Achilles under the motif of revenge give rise to a complicated coil of story progression that keeps the viewer tensed. Achilles' cousin pretends to be Achilles to fight against the Trojans but is killed by Hector. The revenge of Achilles eventually leads to the reciprocal death of Hector, who is the cousin of Achilles' beloved Briseis (Rose Byrne). In turn, Achilles is killed by Hector's younger brother, Paris. In this narrative spiral, Hector dies for his killing of Achilles' cousin and Achilles dies for his love for Hector's cousin (on his attempt to save her from Agamemnon's soldiers).
(3) King Agamemnon (Brian Cox) versus King Priam (Peter O'Toole): the former is characterized as having lusts for power while the latter is portrayed as a reasonable leader showing care for his nationals. Agamemnon pursues his own greed at the expense of his soldiers' lives whereas Priam sacrifices his son for defending his land.
Director Wolfgang Petersen well manipulates mise-en-scenes. Battle and swords fighting are grand and entertaining in martial arts. Careful treatment of scenes of rear nudity of females and partial frontal nudity of Achilles (by way of camera position) do not embarrass female viewers. In a connotative level, it is a good movie that lodges an enquiry into the symptomatic meaning of revenge and war in our present world.
