The film is a comedy filled with dramatic and absurd staging of characters. It is about Lung (Michael Hui)'s gradual psychological mutation on his relations with his daughter, Sophia (Mariam Yeung), and her boyfriend, Frankie (Lau Ching-wan). The plot focuses on Lung and is supported by a subplot of the love affair between Sophia and Frankie. The main plot and subplot quickly cross over in the middle sequences, making the story development relatively linear at the earlier sequences and comparatively bundled at the later sequences. Intensive cross-editing is evident near the end. There are also sequences of Lung's flippant solo shows which Michael's fans are eager to watch.

The film has 2 motifs: (1) the visual motif of martial arts and weapons and (2) the thematic motif of transformation from old to new, which is associated with both Lung's novels and his relations with his daughter. There are 3 spatial orientations in the story: (1) Lung's memory of his past shown in flashbacks; (2) the presence and (3) Lung's intrinsic meditation of the characters in his martial arts novels. Director Joe Ma makes use of the third orientation to create scenes of acrobatic martial arts, which are farcical but visually entertaining. The presence of characters in martial arts costumes complements the visual motif in satisfying the viewer's expectation. Out of the inept flicks, the most meaningful aspect of the film is the deliberation on transgressing from the old to the new for the sake of progression and enhancement. The denouement, typical to this genre, is a happy ending.
