Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks) from an Eastern European country was visiting US. While he was en route to the JFK airport in New York, there was a coup in his country and consequently both his passport and visa were canceled. He was not allowed to enter American soil and could not go back home. So, he was stuck in the airport, waiting for the situation to change. There are chances where he could escape from the airport, but he chose not to because of one reason, a promise to his late father, something that was hidden in a can he brought with him. During his stay in the airport, he met Amelia Warren (Catherine Zeta-Jones), an airhostess who was always waiting for her married boyfriend's paging. He was attracted to her, and he began to work in the airport to earn a perfect date with her...

With Steven Spielberg as the director, the audience would probably be expecting a near perfect film. However, whoever expects perfection will be disappointed. It is hard to believe that, although the film is entertaining, Spielberg and Hanks would want to associate themselves with film production and script of mediocre quality. The stance of the characters about Viktor's being stuck in the airport changed without good reasons. Viktor's not utilizing his chances to escape was not reasonable at all (It seems to make those who do not speak English all look stupid in the eyes of the Americans).

Despite all this, the film is an entertaining one, and probably a meaningful one, too. The story is about waiting, patience, and promises. I particular fall for Viktor's foolishness in keeping a promise that nobody alive but himself would care. (In real life, yours truly had run into so many people who could not keep their promises. Sigh!) Anyway, is every one not waiting for something to happen? In the story, both Viktor and Amelia waiting long enough and patient enough to get what they want. The viewers would likely appreciate that much.
