The narrative of the film is chronological and in a restricted style usually adopted for this genre of thriller movie. Director Caruso establishes an atmosphere of forensic science for the film by (1) having the opening credits shown in characters of sternographic style against the background of human bodies in extreme close-ups and (2) using many extreme close-ups of sense-receiving parts of human body (eyes and fingers). Yet the way FBI Special Agent, Ileana Scott (Angelina Jolie), and the Montreal Police decipher the misery in the narrative is not much along the line of forensic science but by intuition instead (several flash backs portraying agent Scotts intrinsic mediation of the murders). Primarily, the story is about illusion-on-feeling over data-based judgement. This may disappoint viewers who expect to watch a crime movie of genuine forensic science. Part of the narrative is deliberately erected to misguide the viewer for the sake of manufacturing surprises, a classical technique in the thriller genre. As the hints in the narrative already suggest that the suspect, James Costa (Ethan Hawke), may be the murderer, the line of suspension primarily lies more in when the murderer poses danger to agent Scott than in who the murderer is. To this end, the director does well in delaying the revelation to extend the suspension and keep the viewer breaking breath.

Although the film partly resembles The Bone Collector (casting: Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie) in re-creating similar mise-en-scenes of site investigation under hand-held camera and dim lighting, it is only secondary to its predecessor as it fails to replicate the same intensity of suspension. Without prejudice to the minor imperfections, the film suffices to deliver the viewer an ample degree of suspension and surprises in a screen time of 103 minutes.
