During the Korean War, many South Koreans in Seoul were moving away from the city to avoid the war. Jin-seok (Bin Won), while waiting for a train, was drafted by the South Korean army. Jin-tae (Dong-Kun Jang), his elder brother, tried to save his brother but failed, and he was drafted, too. Jin-tae learned that if he could be awarded with a medal, then he can ask his brother to be sent home. So, he voluntarily took part in some dangerous assignments to win the heart of the officers at higher ranks. Jin-seok learned about his brother's plan. He was first worried, and then become angry about his brother's decision. Jin-tae then appeared to be indulged in being a hero than really cared about freeing his brother. Just when Jin-tae got a medal, Jin-seok was detained in the anti-communism activity. Jin-tae thought his brother was dead, and he became another person, which finally led to a 50-year regret of Jin-seok.

The story is mainly about the praising of brotherhood between Jin-tae and Jin-seok. A large part of the film is about how Jin-tae worked hard to try to free Jin-seok. Jin-tae would rather die himself than having his brother killed. That is a love to be appreciated and hard to find. The story also describes the tragedy and irony of the Korean War. It was a time of hardship, and people had trouble getting food. So, Jin-tae's wife Young-shin (Eun-ju Lee) just took part in some communists' activity in exchange for food, and she was being accused as a communist. The punishment is capital. Participating for activities for food just became a choice of death. The writer seems to be standing a bit on the South Korean side, although he does condemn such punishment.

The war scenes are made quite okay. They may not be comparable to those in war films made in Hollywood, the audience would pretty much appreciate the filmmakers' work.

In sum, the film is entertaining to watch. It may make a few of us cry, too. It is certainly worth the time to watch.
