The film belongs to a mix of genres of marital affairs, light comedy and straight musical. The narrative is entirely unrestricted but the depth of information is fairly subjective under the use of the voice over of John Clark (Richard Gere). The movie's theme is approbation on endeavours, endurance, enthusiasm and motivation. There is no bad guy in the story and the whole film is a devoted commendation on encouragement and self actualization. "Shall We Dance?" is a vocal motif used four times in the dialogue in the film.

Avoiding resembling too much the genre of ex-marital affairs at the expense of the framing of comedy, the storyline downplays the romance between John and Paulina (Jennifer Lopez). For some fans of Richard Gere and love stories, it would certainly be better if the plot between the two could have been elaborated in greater depth. Stanley Tucci, who plays the Immigration Officer in "The Terminal", is a Latin dancer in the film and he stages very well with his dancing. Other actors dance no less worse. Deep space staging and deep focus are used in the dancing sequences.

Cinematographically, visual parallel is subtly used. Both the beginning and the ending sequences are made to deliver a lateral moving visual effect. The beginning sequence is shown in several tracking shots whereas the ending sequence is made under wipe-outs. The moving tableaux made under a long sequence of slow wipe-outs intermitted by black clutters in the happy epilogue (which narrates on the post-main plot development of each of the key characters) innovatively and sufficiently enrapture the viewer. The cinematographic parallel complements the narrative in comparing the psychological status of the characters, John and Pauline in particular, (i.e., progressing from futility, monotony and regret at the beginning to confidence, gratitude and hopefulness at the end). It is a movie that delights and purveys encouragement to those who have a commitment on their pursuit of personal goals under difficult circumstantial context.
