Labrador retriever Quill finally comes. The film is touching and sentimental, but in a covert and subtle way. The director bestows a vivid humanity on Quill by (1) building objective motifs (Quill's teddy bear toy, the layout of the plantation in his second masters' garden); (2) using occasional POV shots of Quill; and (3) adopting an intrinsic meditation of Quill (his dreaming of his teddy bear toy). I also use "he" in this review to render humanity to Quill. The story time of 12 years (Quill's life cycle) is succinctly and precisely condensed into a screen time of 100 minutes.
Director Yoichi Sai establishes a tactful shift of point of view from objectivity to subjectivity and strikes a good balance between the two throughout by revealing the identity of the narrator (voice over) only half way down the plot. In such way, he avoids having made the plot excessively sentimental. The narration is knowledgeable (on the training of seeing-eye dogs), communicative, omniscient (foretelling events that will happen) and is shared between the narrator and the characters (Quill's several masters and trainer). The contextual settings of the beginning and the epilogue are symmetrical, giving a peaceful (though mournful) ending. Although some of Quill's behaviours and some scenes depicting the escalating amiability between Quill and his blind master are out of compositional motivation in constructing the plot, there are many realistic motivation (especially on the training of seeing-eye dogs and the blind) throughout.
Thematic-wise, Quill's perfect life cycle and loyalty are a reflection of the human's in the ideal sense. Despite of the cutie scenes at the earlier sequences to gratify the puppy-loving spectators, the film is not for kids. It is more meaningful for adults and perhaps we humans in a deteriorating society are shame of ourselves on not possessing the ethical quality that a dog possesses.
