With Judas (Luca Lionello)'s help, the Pharisees caught Jesus (James Caviezel) and they sent Jesus before Governor Pontius Pilate (Hristo Naumov Shopov) for trial. Pontius did not want to try Jesus, but was afraid to cause unrest by not sentencing Jesus, he asked the Pharisees to take Jesus to Herod (Luca De Dominicis) for trial. Herod thought Jesus was insane and did not try him, so the Pharisees took Jesus back to Pontius Pilate for trial again. To satisfy the Pharisees and the people in the courthouse, he decided to punish Jesus. However, the people there wanted Jesus be crucified. Pontius Pilate had not choice but to sentence Jesus to death.
The film portrays the final hours of Jesus's life. The film does not tell the audience why the people wanted Jesus dead. Perhaps the idea is to raise the audience's interest to find out more about the Bible and the story of Jesus Christ. If my theory is right, then director Mel Gibson is probably very successful in this respect.
The film is full of graphic violence. The torture of Jesus looks very real, and very very bloody. Interestingly, this is the first film about Christianity that carries a Category III mark. While feeling the pain of the protagonist, what crossed my mind was why humans can be so cruel to other members of the same species. As far as I know, humans are the only species that tortures other members of the same species.
While you cannot find Heinz ketchup on the table of the Last Supper, there are a number of flaws in the film. The most obvious one is how the condemned were crucified. You cannot nail a person in the hand and expect that he would stay on the cross. As evidenced, you need to nail the person at the wrists.
The storyline follows quite closely to what is described in the Bible. However, as a screenwriter, Mel Gibson added a number of elements to the film that is not mentioned in the Bible to make the film more dramatic. Perhaps some Christians would not like this fact. The fact that the torturing of Jesus and the carrying of the cross last too long in the film that people feel horrified and bored for a few minutes at the same time.
In any, you cannot undermine the effort of the filmmakers in making this film a piece of art. If you have working knowledge about the Bible, you surely will enjoy the film more.
