Nowhere in Africa is quite a different kind of war film. The story happened far away from the battlefield, where the Jewish protagonists fled to Africa to avoid the oppression from Hitler during the Second World War. So, if you are interested in watch war scenes then this film is probably not for you. Much of the film is dedicated to describing the lives of the people from a country of one side living in the country on another side of the firing line. The conclusion of the story is also considered kind of unusual for someone who had been oppression in his own country before. This in some sense distinguished between the love of the people towards the country and the feelings towards the government of the country.
Apart from the war, the film also talks about the privileges enjoyed by European in Africa. Even though the protagonists were Jewish Europeans, they were trusted by other Caucasian (i.e., the Whites) and held important positions inside many business organizations, where the local African, despite their knowledge about the place and their experience in the business concerned, they were never considered for important roles and had to assume some low-level responsibilities.
The film had won the Oscar of Best Foreign Film in 2002. I think it deserves this award.
