Films of Jackie Chan are action oriented and usually do not have a theme. This product from director Benny Chan is of no exception. A number of sequences and a substantial part of the story construction are subordinate to the motivation of displaying Jackie's martial arts. The massive scale of destruction caused by a small gang of youngsters is far beyond realism and the police's initial lack of their traces is not convincing. After all, movies are movies and they are constructed for entertainment (and visual excitement as well for Jackie's).
Nevertheless, this film does allocate relatively more plot time in portraying the main protagonist Inspector Chan (Jackie Chan)'s emotional status although not in sufficient depth. This is an obvious shift deliberated by Jackie and his crew to instil a change of his movies. Another observed aspect of change about his movies (especially this new product and "The Medallion") is the surrogate for the invincibility of heroes by their vulnerability. In both films, the heroes either die or suffer from severe psychological painfulness.
The narrative is non-linear and restricted. Several flashback sequences are used with the first being a long one (almost 30 minutes). The viewer will only find the relations between Inspector Chan and Cheng (Nicholas Tse) in the last sequence. Director Chan adopts a motif in camera movement: crane shots and the multiplicity of character actions by crane wires in the film. Besides, the intertextual (already used in "Police Story") motif of the action sequence on the double decker (bus) is also used. This time Jackie's fans may be disappointed by his lack of innovation.
Charlie Yeung still retains her charm. The presence of Nicholas Tse, Cherlene Choi and other young brilliant stars as well as the diegesis about the X-game serves to capture the market of the youngsters. The film demonstrates a slight change of Jackie's filmic style in terms of narrative structure, weighting on martial arts and expression of characters' intrinsic status. Let's give more time for Jackie to see if he can sustainedly break his formulae and shift to a new paradigm.
