Back in the 50s, Katherine Watson (Julia Roberts) accepted a teaching position in Wellesley, where the students were all smart and prepared and arrogant. However, the students, who were all female, were not ambitious in life and all they wanted were to marry to raise kids, even before they graduate. Watson taught the girls, including Elizabeth Warren (Kristen Dunst) and Joan Broadwyn (Julia Stiles), and almost changed their lives. At the same time, the schools did not welcome Watson's ideology very much and insist she had to stick to a teaching plan before she could be rehired the following year...

The story is very typical, like Footloose in 80's or Beautician and the Beast in 90's (just for example): A newcomer coming with a modern and "right" ideology and save the world. The film put the setting to an earlier time, when no women were supposed to be ambitious. Probably, the theme is a more direct one than those similar ones, in that it shows women should have dreams and should fight for their dreams.

The film is beautifully made but lack freshness. The actresses' acting was excellent although Roberts' acting is not much different from her acting in other films. It is not a bad film, just not one of the best.
