What is a timeless film? When you watch "Modern Time", which was made 70 years ago, you will probably have the answer.
The tramp (Charlie Chaplin) worked in a factory, doing repetitive and monotonous tasks again and again in a modernized factory. He was fired, and because of some coincidence he was thrown into jail. Meanwhile, a gamin (Paulette Goddard) just escaped from the supervision of a juvenile officer. When the tramp was released from jail, they began to help each other, and they decided to have a home for themselves. Together, they searched for their happiness.
The film seems to be exploring what happiness is, and at the same time how modernization is hurting people rather than helping them. However, it got to my attention the Chaplin never meant to embed any messages into his scripts. In any case, the film inspires people to think about what true happiness is, and above all make us laugh from the beginning of the film to the end of it. The comedy pieces, although nearly 70 years old, are still as successful as it was 70 years ago in attempting to entertain the audience. The 70-year-old background does not alienate us from the characters either. After all, that's what we call: timeless.
